What qualifications do I need to be an internal auditor?

The CIA (Certified Internal Auditor), considered the gold standard for internal auditing professionals is widely accepted across the globe. This credential is ideal for professionals who wish to scale their careers in risk management, auditing, regulatory compliance, internal controls, etc. CFE certification has become an essential tool for professionals in these fields looking to advance their careers and pursue worldwide prospects. Certified internal auditors drive an organization’s performance by leveraging their broad knowledge of continuous process improvement.
To obtain the CIA credential, a professional must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Bachelor’s Degree (or Equivalent): A candidate must have a bachelor’s degree, however, work experience is not required to take the exam. To get certified, they must pass all three exam components. They should also have at least two years of similar experience in internal audits.
- Master’s Degree Holders (or Equivalent) A master’s degree holder can take an exam (before earning the required work experience). Before they can become certified, they must pass all three exam components. They should also have at least a year of experience with internal audits or something similar.
- Candidates with an active internal audit practitioner credential can apply to take the CIA challenge exam. To get certified, candidates must pass all three exam portions and have at least five years of internal auditing experience, or the equivalent.
- Candidates with five years of internal auditing experience (or equivalent) can apply to take the CIA test. But before they can be certified, they must pass all three exam components. These specialists meet the eligibility requirements without the need for any extra experience.
- Applicants must adhere to the IIA’s Code of Ethics, which outlines the principles and behavior standards that Certified Internal Auditors are expected to observe. These principles include competence, objectivity, integrity, and confidentiality.
