  • Bachelor’s Degree (or Equivalent): To take the exam, a candidate must have a bachelor’s degree, however, they are not required to have the necessary work experience. To become certified, they need to pass each of the three exam sections. They also need to have two years or more of equivalent expertise in internal auditing.
  • Master’s Degree Holders (or Equivalent) A master’s degree holder is eligible to take an exam (before gaining the necessary work experience). • Holder of an Active Internal Audit Practitioner Designation: Candidates may apply to take the CIA challenge exam if they hold an active internal audit practitioner designation. To become certified, they must clear all three exam sections and have at least five years of experience in internal auditing, or the equivalent.
  • Five Years of Experience in Internal Auditing (or Equivalent): Candidates may apply to take the CIA test if they have completed five years of internal auditing or have equivalent experience. But before they can get certified, they have to pass all three exam sections. There is no additional experience required for these experts to meet the eligibility requirements.
